Windows profiles

A profile is a setting the PC receives at the next check-in. One PC can receive several profiles at once. Unlike Android: they are not replaced by a single policy.

When to use thisThe PC is Enrolled. You want Wi-Fi, a passcode, restrictions, Windows Update, or BitLocker.

Settings → Windows → Profiles.

Empty Windows profiles page, New profile button
The demo organization has no profiles yet. The middle of the page says No Windows profiles. New profile is at the top right.

Create one

  1. Click New profile. The dialog has no Draft control. Saving makes the profile usable.

  2. Enter Name. Choose Type.

  3. Click Save. Cancel closes without saving.

New Windows profile dialog, Type set to Wi-Fi
Type defaults to Wi-Fi, with SSID and Password. Changing Type changes the fields below. This picture was taken before anything was typed and before Save.

Each type

TypeWhat you fill in
Wi-FiSSID and Password.
PasscodeMinimum length. Turns on the requirement for a device password.
RestrictionsThe Disable camera switch.
Windows UpdateAllow automatic Windows Update.
BitLockerRequire device encryption, let a standard user encrypt, and warn about other encryption software.
Custom OMA-URIOne OMA-URI address and a value. For an item that has no form of its own.
Require device encryption off does not encrypt the disk. On can start BitLocker at the next check-in. Some BitLocker items need a higher Windows edition. Do not turn it on a test PC if you do not want the disk encrypted yet.

Assign and delete

On the profile row, Assign. The target is Entire customer or Device group. Several profiles on the same group stack. They do not overwrite each other.

Delete makes the PC stop receiving that profile’s items at the next check-in. Edit changes the contents. An enrolled PC receives the new copy at the next check-in.

To remove a profile that is assigned by group, do it here. Do not remove it with a command on each PC. Installing or deleting a profile on one PC is the job of the command box.

Common questions

I clicked Save, but the PC still has no Wi-Fi?
The PC fetches the profile at check-in, not when you click Save. If you have not assigned it, the PC does not receive it. See Check-in interval on Turn on the service.
Does this profile apply to an iPhone?
No. An iPhone uses Configuration profiles, and the profile must be Active. A Windows profile has no Draft control on the new-profile form.
